Many medical billers find themselves strapped to their desks for most of their life. Today's medical billers are often working overtime and not getting paid for it. Most are under unfair contracts that force them to work long hours for mediocre pay. The good news is that this is all changing. For the past 3 months, the world has seen the new ICD-10 codes. As you may already know, they are more complex and hard to understand. The codes are often longer and require a deeper understanding of how to use use them correctly. It is difficult to find billers that understand this new coding system.
For starters, under the old ICD-9, the system allowed for easy billing. A biller would simply put the codes in and receive a check from the insurance company in a matter of weeks. The new coding system requires more in depth detail. People want to know how it all works and if they can get educated in it. Becoming an expert in ICD-10 means more power for you. Since you will be a rare find, you can demand more pay, time off and more respect. If you are working for a physician's office now, you are probably aware that working in healthcare is tough. You have to work long hours and be married to your job. Many doctors work 8 to 12 hours a day. Some are on 24 hour shifts. It is tiring and often exhausting for people to go through day to day.
When you work towards a specific goal in billing, you begin to see that you can accomplish your goals. You can accomplish it because you are striving hard to perfect something that so many people have trouble with. ICD-10 coding is no easy task. It often involves people of like minds coming together. When you feel that your insight into a patient is good, you can often document the bill better.
Many billers today handle complex systems. They think that they are putting in the right information for reimbursement. However, they often find out that the insurance companies do not give back a good payment because they are claiming that the information is not correct. It is frustrating to put your hard work into something and not have it pay off in the end.
It is becoming more common for coders to go back to school in order to learn how to work with ICD-10. The healthcare system in general is hard to understand for most doctors. Most doctors today were only trained in medicine and not billing. The billing has to do with a whole different area of study. A good biller today should have a master's degree in medical billing and their ICD-10 certification. If you have both, you are going to find that it is much easier to keep a job.
