Having Some Fun With Tarot Card Meanings

by Robert McDonald

There is something in most people's nature that is intrigued by the unknown. We may not really believe another person can predict what will happen in the future or be able to tell all about ourselves by looking into a crystal ball, but it is fun to speculate these things are possible. If you have ever been tempted to stop when you see a roadside sign advertising palm readings or pay to find out what lurks behind a closed curtain at a carnival show, you are not alone. Tarot readings seem somewhat exotic, and most people do not know much about them.

There are differing opinions regarding the origin and history of these cards. Some try to trace them back to ancient Egypt and others believe they did not become significant until the fourteenth or even the eighteenth century. Stories, that are more or less persuasive, can be found all over the internet if you are interested in researching their background. The meaning of the individual cards can differ as well, depending on the person reading them.

The Fool is an interesting card. It depicts a youthful individual who seems to have the whole world in front of him. Most readers will you tell that he represents freedom from care and day to day responsibility. He comes and goes as he pleases and never seems to make plans for the future.

The Empress card embraces nature, and encourages calmness and serenity in the face of adversity. This character has confidence in the future and in herself. She represents abundant goodness and creativity. She has an aura of wholesomeness and seems to be the card that most represents productivity and seasonal nature of life.

The Emperor card, on the other hand, is a go getter type that uses strength and power to his advantage. This is a person who is willing to step over, and sometimes on, more timid individuals. He believes in structure and controlling his environment. He is not always open to different opinions.

The Hermit, not so surprisingly, symbolizes solitude, introspection, and even wisdom. The drawing on the card shows an old man with a long beard, cloak and cane holding up a lighted lantern. He apparently retreats from the outside world in order to contemplate the meaning of his life and the lives of others.

The Lovers is probably the card in the deck that most interests anyone who believes in a serious reading. Not surprisingly again, this is the representation of sexual desire, unity, and intimate relationships. Some fortune tellers will let you know however, that this does not necessarily represent a union between two people. It can have other meanings.

Having your future read by a believer can be very interesting and might give you something to think about on your own. It may help you work through some problems in your life in new ways. Even if you are skeptical and take the whole idea with a huge grain of salt, you will at least have fun.
