Navicular disease is nothing new among horses and it affects their foot's flat bone which is located at the back side of the coffin joint and attaches to the pedal bone. You will commonly observe navicular disease in horses and it adversely affects their foot health.

Till this date, it hasn't been identified that what causes such disease in horses but it affects the horse in a negative way. If proper treatment and care is not provided, the health and well being of the animal is affected to a great degree. The animal would feel immense pain and this disease usually occurs in horses who are older than five years.

One of the most common symptom of navicular syndrome is that you would feel a certain level of lameness in your horse's front foot. The lameness is something that occurs every now and then especially if you try to train the horse on hard ground or make him ride in small circles. If you find him struggling then the first thing you have to do is to inspect his foot and make sure you are able to provide proper treatment to him.

Proper check and diagnosis is very important because depending on the diagnosis, a prescribed treatment is offered to the animal. In order to do the diagnosis accurately, the health record of the horse is checked thoroughly to ensure the animal is fit and healthy otherwise. In some cases, it is recommended to do radiography to assess the situation accurately.

There are treatments that could prevent this syndrome to cause further harm but its pretty hard to cure it completely. With the help of the treatment, your horse will be able to live a normal life but you'd have to remain more careful regarding shoeing and trimming because if anything is done wrong, it may affect the health of the animal.

In some cases, it becomes essential to carry out a surgical procedure but surgery should always be considered as a last resort because there are certain implications that could result due to such procedure. The surgical procedure is known as Neurectomy and once it is performed, then the foot must be inspected on a daily basis throughout the horse's life because if it is not inspected, then its highly likely that some sort of damage or complication might arise.

No matter what sort of foot shape a horse have, whether it is big, small or odd shaped, this disease can affect any one of them. Whereas, if proper care is taken then it is highly likely to prevent it from occurring. The unfortunate thing is that there is not much information available regarding the causes of this illness which makes it difficult to cure.

Its always better to take preventive measures beforehand so try to maintain your horse and his health and inspect his feet as often as you can so that you could prevent such thing from happening. You are responsible for the health and well being of your animal so make sure you don't let him suffer and it can only be prevented if you closely monitor his overall health and condition of his feet.
