Marijuana is also known by several other names including cannabis. It refers to a preparation of the cannabis plant which is meant to be used as a psychoactive medicine or drug. The plant from which this preparation is derived is called cannabis sativa and it contains 483 known compounds. The main psychoactive part of all the compounds is known as tetrahydrocannabinol, often abbreviated as THC. There are many marijuana dispensaries in Phoenix one can get the compound from.

There are over 65 other cannabinoids apart from tetrahydrocannabinol contained in cannabis. People consume the substance in various ways such as eating, smoking, and vaporization. In most cases, people smoke through pipes or hand-rolled cigarettes. Empty cigars can also be filled with the substance and then smoked.

Vaporization is a relatively new method of consuming marijuana, which is meant to avoid inhalation of the smoke. This process involves the use of devices called vaporizers. Vaporizers pull active ingredients including tetrahydrocannabinol from the plant and collect the extracted vapor in a storage unit. One can then inhale the vapor as opposed to the smoke. Cannabis can also be mixed in various foods including tea, candy, cookies, and brownies.

People use cannabis for varied reasons. In most cases, the reasons are recreational or medicinal. However, some people have been known to use it for spiritual or religious purposes. Statistics indicate that on a global scale, between 2.7-4.9 percent of individuals aged between 15-65 used cannabis in 2013. On the other hand, in America alone, 43 percent of the population used the drug in 2015 with the percentage rising to 51 in 2016.

In the US, it is estimated that at least one person out of three people has consumed this drug. Both in the US and globally, cannabis is the most commonly consumed illegal substance. It has a long history with its usage dating back to the third millennium. Most countries have placed restrictions on its usage. It is illegal to use, sell, or possess the drug unless one has a medical prescription for the same.

Mental and physical effects of cannabis are the reason for its use medically. These effects include general change in perception, increased appetite, and heightened mood. Several medical conditions can be treated or managed using this substance. For instance cannabis is useful in chemotherapy for reducing vomiting and nausea. It also improves appetite in HIV/AIDS victims, treats chronic pain, and assists with muscle spasms.

There are several short-term effects associated with cannabis. The most common ones include dry mouth, decreased short-term memory, red eyes, anxiety, paranoia, and impaired motor skills among others. Short term effects take variable amounts of time to show depending on the mode of consumption. In the long term, users are prone to addiction, reduced mental ability, and behavioral problems among children.

Several protests have been held in the US with the aim of having cannabis legalized. As a result, the drug has been made legal in many states for recreational and medicinal use. A key concern about the drug is that production and many other major aspects about it remain unregulated.
